About this hymn

Charles Wesley's Christmas hymn originally began "Hark, how all the welkin rings"; George Whitefield gave it the opening line sung today. The tune comes from a festival cantata Mendelssohn wrote for a Gutenberg celebration, fitted to Wesley's words by English organist William Cummings.
